Blog Fodder: Cathedral Window Quilts & a Giveaway

Welcome to this week's Linky Party!

The theme this week is Cathedral Window Quilts. According to the
Creative Glossary, a cathedral window quilt is one which “uses a quilting technique that centers a piece of colored block of fabric on a muslin square that is stitched and folded.” It uses a quilt-as-you-go technique that uses an origami style of folding the background fabric to form a window frame and inserting a pretty patch in the center to represent the window pane, and is extremely portable once the background is pieced.

February's Guild Meeting

The highlight of this month's meeting was a lecture and demo on Setting Options for Blocks by Carol Loessel.  She brought in a trunk-full of quilts that she had made over the years to provide us with a visual representation of her techniques.  Carol has published a book called Start with Scraps which she signed for me.

The committee members responsible for Charity quilts gave us a Show and Tell of all the preemie, baby and youth quilts that had been made during the month of January.  It's quite impressive how involved the guild is in making quilts for charity.  From their pile of kits, I picked up one that will be donated to Project Linus for a little girl.  It is a pre-printed panel and the backing and binding is provided.  All I have to do is provide the batting, layer the quilt and finish it.  One of the main reasons I joined the guild is to become an active participant in Project Linus.

Next month, one of the guild members will be demonstrating how to make an envelope purse.

Now, that's something to look forward to!

Quilt Your Heart Out

Desi Quilter's January Challenge was to create a quilt for my sewing room that included text.  I came up with this idea.

QUILT

The word 'Quilt' was composed on the computer and then each letter was reverse appliqued. The heart was drawn with the help of a plastic template and also reverse appliqued. The other two pieces of text were free motion quilted on after the quilt was layered.

Tried free motion quilting a stipple on the quilt by machine, but needed a lot more practice, so I hand-quilted dragonflies and stippled the center panel. The borders were quilted in the ditch because I ran out of time. That'll teach me to leave things till the last moment! This quilt was done in four days and just made the extended deadline!

Here is a picture of the back of the quilt.

I'd better get cracking on February's Valentine's Day challenge!

Have a great day!

Grab My Button!

My Favourite Things

I've added a button you can grab off the sidebar of my blog that looks like the image on the left side of this page.  I learnt how to do it at Mommy Bits and feel so proud to have figured it all out!  Add it to the sidebar of your blog for a quick and easy way to get over to the weekly linky party.

If you have any problems setting it up, please don't hesitate to get back to me.

Have a great day!

A quick tip: When you copy the code from Mommy Bits, make sure to replace all the quotation marks with...yes...quotation marks.  Just a quirk that will get you if you don't!

Random Integer Generator

This form allows you to generate random integers. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs.

Part 1: The Integers

Generate 1 random integers (maximum 10,000).
Each integer should have a value between 1 and 30 (both inclusive; limits ±1,000,000,000).
Format in 1 column(s).

Part 2: Go!

Be patient! It may take a little while to generate your numbers...
Note: The numbers generated with this form will be picked independently of each other (like rolls of a die) and may therefore contain duplicates. There is also the Sequence Generator, which generates randomized sequences (like raffle tickets drawn from a hat) and where each number can only occur once.
