Two "Cuppa Tea" Mug Rugs

I can't believe these haven't been blogged about before! They were made in July 2012 using a Craftsy Independent Designer's pattern, which I purchased.

Red, White And Blue Mug Rug

8" Square Mug Rug
It's been a while, four months to be exact, since I went anywhere near my sewing machine. That may be because even though it's been a rainy summer, there were stretches of really good weather and there's always a lot to do and admire in the garden.

Quilt Assistant - A Free Downloadable Quilt Design Software

At our last Quilt Guild meeting before summer break, the guild needed someone to take on the responsibility for their newsletter which is published once every two months. No one seemed interested in taking on the responsibility and, being one of the newest members and never having seen their newsletter, I was a little unsure of what the post involved.

Mouse Pincushion with Matching
Scraps/Thread Catcher
This duo was made last April for a DQ Challenge project. Links were provided in that post for making the pincushion. I've since received a request to share the directions for the thread catcher, so here it is.

Curve, Circle or Ring Quilts & a Giveaway

Welcome to this week's Linky Party!

The theme this week is Curve, Circle or Ring Quilts. These are quilts made using pieced curves, inlaid circles or rings. Names they go by are Drunkard’s Path, Dresden Plate, Double Wedding Ring, Cathedral Windows, Grandmother’s Fan, Japanese Fan, et al, and includes any quilt with curves or pieced in such a way as to give the impression of curves.

You may share any quilts or blocks you have made or are making yourself, works in progress (WIPs), unfinished objects (UFOs) or finished projects.

Double Wedding Ring Quilt - A UFO

Double Wedding Ring Quilt
A long-time UFO
Considering  a linky party on quilts with curves, circles or rings is long overdue, this unfinished object (UFO) which has been hidden on purpose for decades, is a prime example of one.

Every one of the seams on this quilt is a curved seam, but that's not the prime deterrent to finishing it. I've completed 16 blocks because that's how many centers have been cut out.  For a king size quilt, which is what this quilt is meant to be, I need 72 centers!

This brings me to a couple of tips I'd like to share from 22+ years of quilting experience.

DQ April 2013 Challenge - Mouse Pincushion & Reversible Scraps/Threads Catcher

Mouse Pincushion in
Scraps and Threads Catcher
This challenge organised by Desi Quilters (DQ), a creative group of modern quilters from India, was a really fun project because I love pincushions and other sewing and quilting accessories. Add to this the fact that April 22nd was Earth Day this year and I was able to combine a few of my interests to come up with this entry.

Crazy Quilts & a Giveaway

Welcome to this week's Linky Party!

The theme this week is Crazy Quilts. According to How To Quilt’s Glossary of Quilting Terms, Crazy Quilts are “quilts that are made by covering a foundation piece of fabric with odd-shaped pieces of fabric, and usually include fabrics other than cotton - for example velvet, silk, corduroy. The fabrics are often embellished with fancy embroidery stitches.

Stack and Whack Quilts & a Giveaway

Welcome to this week's Linky Party!

The theme this week is Stack & Whack (S&W) Quilts. According to Quilt Block of the Month Glossary, a “Stack and Whack Quilt is one where blocks of fabric are stacked on top of each other so that the patterns are aligned, then they are cut in such a way that when pieced together properly, the sewn blocks will form a kaleidoscope pattern.” This is one kind of stack & whack quilt. Other S&W quilts are made by stacking, whacking and shuffling any number of fabrics to make unique and diverse blocks.

Half Square Triangle Quilts & a Giveaway

Welcome to this week's Linky Party!

The theme this week is Half Square Triangle Quilts. According to Quilt University’s Quilt Glossary, the half-square triangle is “the most used pieced unit in quilting. It is a square with a diagonal seam line.  Two different fabrics are on each side of the line, usually forming a light/dark configuration.”

Elvira's Stars Quilt Along

Elvira's Stars QAL
This is a WIP (Work-in-Progress) from a
Quilt Along (QAL) I followed on
Desi Quilters. There are four parts to this QAL
and I've completed three of them.

Flying Geese Star blocks
Ohio Star blocks
Variable Friendship Star blocks
A preview of Flying Geese & Ohio Star blocks
A preview of Flying Geese, Ohio &
Variable Star blocks
This QAL was fun to follow.
The instructions were clear and concise.
Each step in the instructions were complemented by photographs.

Star Log Cabin Quilt

A single block from the quilt.
It's a twin-size quilt.
A birthday present for son #2.
He picked out the star formation in the layout.
He likes stars.  There are stars in the fabrics too.
We're both happy.
I because the quilt's finished and
he because it's going to keep him warm this winter.

This was quilted in the ditch on the sewing machine.

Star Baby Quilt

I found the pattern for this baby quilt in a magazine.
The entire quilt, except the borders,
was made with half square triangles.
It's a one star block that made a perfect baby quilt.

Our adorable grandson used it as a
play-quilt until he began crawling.
In the winter we use it in the car to keep him warm.

The quilt was fun to make
and even more fun to quilt because of its size.

I quilted this baby quilt by machine, using tear-away stencils that were pinned to the center of the quilt top. The straight lines around the edges of the star block were done using a quilting bar attachment that fits into the back of the needle on the sewing machine. I used a ready-made satin binding to finish this quilt.

To make this 48" x 48" baby quilt, follow instructions for making half square triangles (HSTs), using the following measurements.

Cutting:

Note - to construct a half-square triangle (HST), determine the size of the finished unit and add 7/8th inch.  I will be rounding the 7/8th inch to 1 inch and trimming off the excess after the unit is sewn.  For two 9" finished blocks, I will need two 9-1/2" HST units plus 1 inch = two 10-1/2" squares.

Wash and iron all fabrics.

Using a 12-1/2" square ruler:

Cut six 10-1/2" squares from the light fabric (white in this quilt)
Cut six 10-1/2" squares from the medium fabric (pink in this quilt)
Cut four 10-1/2" squares from the dark fabric (blue in this quilt)

Sewing:

Follow steps 1 to 10 under the Construction heading
Make 4 blue & white HSTs
Make 4 pink & blue HSTs
Make 8 pink & white HSTs
Trim all HSTs to 12-1/2" square

Configure the HSTs as in the picture above and sew the quilt top.
Add a 6" border on all four sides.
Layer, baste and quilt as desired.
Bind the quilt with double-fold binding, mitering the corners to finish the quilt.

Cheers!

Kaleidoscope Star Quilt

This was probably the most interesting quilt I've ever made.
I chose an oriental theme for my focus fabric.
The repeats in the pattern of the fabric were segmented
and stacked on top of each other six times,
triangles cut from each set of six,
which were then pieced into a hexagon.
The resulting pattern for each
of the 18 hexagons in this quilt is unique.

I've shown only 6 of them.
I like the 'movement' in each block.
  The colours are incredible.
I couldn't stop sewing this quilt because
my expectations kept on building.

It isn't until all the blocks are sewn
that one can appreciate the magic
that is created from one focal fabric.

The quilt was machine quilted by an independent long-arm quilter.

Cheers!
